DB Universe
Curious as to why animals seem to walk among humans and talk normally? Don't understand this talk about the Saiya-jins? Have you ever wondered why Piccolo is green? Then this section is the one for you! In this section, we explain the zany world of Akira Toriyama's Dragonball!
To begin, the Dragonball world is an Earth with one single large continent (imagine Pangea), with small islands scattered around it. This continent has six main cities: Western City, Eastern City, Northern City, Southern City (^_^), Central City, and (after the Cell Saga) Satan City. Around these cities are the suburbs, where most of our hereos live.
You might have noticed that extinct animals (such as the saber-toothed tiger) roam the wild areas of our Dragonball continent, and might have found this a bit odd. In Toriyama's Dragonball world, creatures such as dinosaurs still roam this planet like any other modern-day animal.
Other animals (such as cats and dogs) walk around on city streets and talk like humans, and hold jobs such as being mayor or a policeman. Once again Toriyama created this world this way, for whatever reason we'll probably never know. Animals are considered as humans in this world, as well as dinosaurs being just a common circumstance.
Now, you might have seen one of the characters in the anime or manga who has taken a small capsule, push a small button on top, thrown the capsule a small distance, and see it explode and some object appearing once the smoke has cleared. Thanks to the master-mind Dr. Briefs (also Bulma's father), these handy-dandy little 'Hoi Poi' Capsules are common in everyone's pockets!
You can store things in these capsules ranging from refridgerators to houses, and once they're out, you can easily revert them back to their capsule state. Dr. Briefs became very rich with the invention of these capsules, and he owns the huge Capsule Corporation building located in the Western City. The Capsule Corporation constantly creates new models, getting more and more money from its customers.
Although, no one knows what would happen if you closed the capsule while someone was inside the house, not even Toriyama himself. As your imagination...
Saiya-jins? Nameks? Yardratto-jins? Who the heck are these guys?! Welcome to the Dragonball Universe, where races of all shape and size exist!
The Saiya-jins (besides the Earthlings) are the main species in the DBZ series. A fighting race, the Saiya-jins were known through the galaxy as a violent race led by the powerful King Vegeta. The Saiya-jins worked for the evil Furiza, taking over planets, killing the inhabitants and selling the planets on a market under his rule. The Saiya-jins even sent their infants to far-away planets so they would grow up and destroy the inhabitants for this market. Eventually, though, Furiza began to realize that the Saiya-jins were becoming too powerful (they become more powerful after each battle), and destroyed their planet, leaving only 4 survivors left. The reason for his action is backed up with the legend of the Super Saiya-jin, a super warrior who's supposed to appear every 1,000 years or so. Furiza greatly feared this legend, and destroying the Saiya-jins assured him that the legend couldn't happen. But we know that it will... won't we?
The Nameks are a race of green beings with two antennae, the ability to regenerate limbs as long as the head is intact, and incredible fighting or healing power. On the planet Namek, the population is divided by the 'Healers' and the 'Fighters'. The Namekians are also the original creators of the mystical dragonballs, the 7 spheres which you can gather together to summon a dragon and be granted one wish. Unlike any creatures, Nameks can survive by only drinking water, which gives us here at Southern City our theory on how Nameks are plants (hee hee!).
The Yardratto-jins play a small role in the DBZ plot. Their the creatures on the planet which Gokou crash-lands on after he barely escapes from the doomed Namek. These people aren't very powerful, but they know some incredible techniques, such as the ShunkunIdou ("Instanteous Movement") technique, which allows the person to teleport wherever they can sense someone's ki.
I suppose we should have talked about the dragonballs a little earlier. The dragonballs originated from the planet Namek, and came to the Earth when the young Kami-sama landed there on his spaceship and created a set of dragonballs from his own power.
As the legend goes, once you gather all seven of the magical orbs, you can summon the dragon, Shenron, to grant you a single wish. But, as all grant-wishes deals go, there are a few catches:
-you cannot use the same wish twice
-you cannot have a wish that exceeds the dragon's power
-once a wish is granted, the dragonballs are scattered throughout the Earth once again, and they turn into stones for one year
Later in the series, Dende becomes the God of the Earth, and he creates his own set of dragonballs, making the dragon able to grant three wishes instead of one.
