Son Gokou

Son Gokou is the hero of most of the series. Being the strongest of the Z-senshi (with the exception of his son, Gohan), he is probably the kindest soul anime has to offer. His personality doesn't change through the series along with his power and level of strength, but stays the same. Sometimes quite clueless, Gokou can be serious one moment and naive the next.
Son Gokou isn't someone who's very good with technology. Something as simple as 2 x 40 could take this naive man all night to find the solution. But his knowledge of martial arts makes up for his naiveness and lack of everyday common-sense.
Ever since Gokou was a infant, he had shown signs of incredible strength and ki (for information on what 'senshi' and 'ki' means, go to our A Little Japanese section). His adopted grandfather, old Son Gohan, trained him in the martial arts as a young boy. Later, Gokou was trained by old Kamesennin (an old and sometimes very perverted turtle hermit), then by Kaio-sama (a god in the afterlife). Son Gokou is constantly training to become stronger.
Several times throughout the series, the evil villians use Gokou weakness to escape with their lives and continue their horror and destruction -- Gokou's trusting nature. Gokou believes that there's good in everyone, and that no one can be pure evil (he later learns that there is one soul he is pure evil, but this is a Gokou biography). Often, Gokou believes in his foes' pleas for forgiveness, and trusts them, making them promise to never hurt another soul again. But, being a evil villian, they always turn on the innocent Son Gokou, and he is forced to kill them.
Gokou would never fight anyone unless they were evil, and destroying other people. It is against his kind and sweet nature to hurt or kill anyone without reason.
But Gokou wasn't always so kind and naive. For it was later learned that Gokou is a Saiya-jin, one of the members of the most powerful (and cruel) races of the universe. The planet of Vegeta, the home of the terrible Saiya-jins, was destroyed by an evil being by the name of Freeza, and only four Saiya-jins remained alive. One of them was formally named Kakarotto, or by what we know him as -- Son Gokou.
Going against his evil heritage, Son Gokou always fought on the side of good. He would do anything for anyone good, even if they were a stranger to him. That is why I believe that Son Gokou is one of the best role models that anime has to offer.

Son Gohan

Gohan is the first son of Gokou and Chi Chi. When he was a little boy, he resembled young Gokou right down to the monkey tail.
Gohan has a huge hidden power within him, and could have easily surpassed his father and could have been the most powerful of the Z senshi. But, Chi Chi always insisted on Gohan's studying more than his training. Not even Gokou could convice her otherwise.
By having a Saiya-jin father and a human mother, Gohan is just as powerful or even more powerful than a full-blooded Saiya-jin.
During the battle with Cell (when Gohan was about nine), Gokou had sacrificed his life to destroy Cell, only for his attempt to be in vain. As soon os Cell regenerated he killed Mirai Trunks by blowing a hole though his chest (not one of my favorite scenes), and destroyed Andriod 16. With tears streaming down his face, Gohan exploded with rage, his hidden strength once again submerging. One of the greatest songs was played during this scene: Unmei no Hi Tamashii tai Tamashii (A Day of Destiny Spirit VS Spirit).
When the smoke cleared, the regular black-haired Gohan was replaced by a golden haired, green-eyed Super Saiya-jin 2 Gohan. In his rage and sadness, Gohan transformed to SSJ2 (Super Saiya-jin 2).
Cell died that day.
After the Cell Saga, Gohan becomes the main character due to his father's death during the battle. Gohan (when he's old enough) attends the Orange Star High School, and becomes the 'Great Saiyaman'.
Let me explain.
The 'Great Saiyaman' is Gohan's alter ego, you know, like Batman and Bruce Wayne? The Great Saiyaman is Gohan, with a watch that Bulma invented for him, he can switch his identity anytime.
During the Buu Saga, Gohan trains to the 'Mystic' form, which is said to be stronger than any Super Saiya-jin form. Gohan doesn't quite make it, but he comes close.

Son Goten

Goten is the second son of Chi Chi and Gokou, and the younger brother of Gohan. Goten was born a little after the Cell Saga (Gokou was dead then, so he didn't know his father). Unlike all the other half-Saiya-jins and Saiya-jins, Goten was able to be a Super Saiya-jin at a very young age. In order to be a Super Saiya-jin, you must be very angry, with your rage over it's limits. But, Goten did it on his first try, and he wasn't even mad.
Goten looks exactly like Gokou when he was young, and is just as naive. When Goten was eight year s old, Gokou was granted one day of life on earth, and cute little Goten met his father for the first time. When the day is over though, it is a very touching scene between Goten and Gokou.
Now, Goten has a best friend. Believe it or not, it's the son of Vegeta -Gokou's rival, they always spar and compete- Chibi [little] Trunks (I'll get into the 'Chibi' thing is his bio)! These two characters are inseparable, literally. There is this technique -called Fusion- which alows two people to fuse together to make a new fighter. Now, this technique only lasts 30 minutes, when the 30 minutes are up, the fighter turns back into the two people again.
When Chibi Trunks and Goten fuse, they becom Gotenks, the only other Saiya-jin that can attain SSJ 3 (besides Gokou). More on Gotenks in his bio.
As Goten gets older, he doesn't train as much, and by the end of DBZ, his power level is no where near what it should be.

Vegeta

Vegeta is the prince of the Saiya-jins, who lived on planet Vegeta long ago. But, Vegeta was taken away by his father at a young age, and was ruled by Freezer, the most powerful warrior in the universe. Worried that the Saiya-jins, with their ever-increasing power and strength, could someday be a threat to him. So he destroyed the planet, with only four Saiya-jins left alive (who where on other planets at the time). Those Saiya-jins were Nappa, Raditzu (Gokou's evil older brother), Kakarotto (Gokou), and....
Vegeta.
For years Vegeta was forced to be under Freeza's rule, not daring to attack him- yet. For every battle a Saiya-jin is in, they become stronger. Vegeta grew stronger and stronger to defeat Freeza, but then he heard of the dragonballs on Earth, and how they could grant him a wish.
Vegeta and Nappa went to the planet earth to collect the dragonballs, but he met....
Young (but trained by Piccolo) Gohan, Piccolo, Kuririn, Yamcha, Tienshinhan, Chaotsu, (and later on) Gokou. Vegeta was defeated and retreated to Freeza's planet to heal.
Nappa was killed.
When Gohan and Kuririn went to Namek to collect those dragonballs, Vegeta went there as well, unaware that his foes were there. But when the "Ginyu Force" came, Vegeta, Gohan, and Kuririn were forced to pull their powers together and defeat them and then to defeat Freeza himself. They were defeated, but then Gokou came and joined the battle.
Vegeta battled Freeza, and was killed, but he was wished back and then transported to Earth (long story).
Ever since then, Vegeta has trained hard to surpass the most powerful Z-senshi, Gokou. Pushing himself over his limits, he attained Super Saiya-jin. Later (but he was Majin Vegeta), he became a SSJ2.
But, Vegeta (though with his pride he would never admit it), fell in love with Bulma, and one night.......*ahem*...well, let's just say Chibi Trunks was born not long after...
Later, Bulma and Vegeta had a daughter, Bra (yes I know, their children are brands of underwear).
Vegeta never did surpass Gokou's strength, but he is the most hard-working character in Dragonball Z by far!

Chibi Trunks

"Chibi" means little in Japanese. I'll explain that later. Chibi Trunks is the best friend of Goten, even though he's a year older than him, and the son of Vegeta, Gokou's rival, oh well!
Like Goten, Chibi Trunks was able to attain Super Saiya-jin at a young age. This version of Trunks grew up with Vegeta, making him different from Mirai Trunks (more on that later). Chibi Trunks has a big mouth, and usually gets himself in trouble with his best friend, Goten.
Chibi Trunks is the only Saiya-jin with purple hair (all Saiya-jins have black), which makes him stand out in a Saiya-jin crowd. But, as a Super Saiya-jin, his hair turns gold, and his eyes green. Chibi Trunks is a half- Saiya-jin, same with his little sister, Bra.

Mirai Trunks

Now, "Mirai" means big, or adult in Japanese. This version of Trunks is not from the regular timeline, he's from the future- and one without hope.
In his timeline, Gokou died of a heart disease, and a few years later, two andriods attacked the world, killing all of the Z senshi, except Mirai Trunks (who was a baby at the time), and Gohan.
When Trunks became old enough, Gohan began to train (Gohan was a teenager) Trunks. But no matter how hard Trunks tried, he couldn't get himself angry enough to go Super-Saiya-jin.
So Gohan trained Trunks; but no matter how hard Trunks tried, he couldn't become a Super Saiya-jin. One day, Gohan and Trunks found themselves nearby the Capitol-- where the andriods 17 and 18 were attacking. Trunks wanted to go with Gohan to battle, but Gohan knocked him out and went alone...
When Trunks woke up, it was dark and raining. No sound of the battle was heard, it was already over. Trunks flew around, trying to find his master. When Trunks found him- Gohan was dead.
In his sadness and rage, Mirai Trunks went Super-Saiya-jin for the first time, calling out Gohan's name over and over. Years later, Bulma, Trunks's mother, manages to finish the time machine she had been wokring on for a long time. Mirai Trunks, now 17, went to the past, when the legendary Son Gokou was still alive, to warn him of the danger coming, and of his death from his sickness.
Mirai Trunks gave Gokou the medicine to save his life, and told him when and where the andriods would appear. Then, Mirai Trunks went back to his time, and the Z' senshi trained and prepared for the andriods.

Piccolo

Piccolo is the most wonderfullest and beautifullest green man in the whole entire world. I love him, he is the ultimate cool. No one can surpasss Piccolo's greatness. He is the morning and the evening star. Piccolo=cool. On a scale of one to ten on coolness Piccolo ranks eleven. The only other character that comes close to Piccolo's cool is the great Mirai Trunks, but Piccolo will always be number one.
Outside he has a green candy shell while on the inside he is filled with chocolate. How many licks will it take to get to the center of a Piccolo pop? The world may never know.
Gotcha!
Heehee, see what happens when Tially runs wild (runs with scizzors)
